This 26 year old nonprofit close to our heart - works to unite military families who are separated either by deployment, or other physical distances, through the bonding experience of reading aloud together.
United Through Reading offers service members the opportunity to be video-recorded reading children's books to their families at home. The videos and books are sent home to their families to help bridge even the greatest distances. United Through Reading has nearly 200 recording stations across the world -- on Navy ships, in civilian airports, on military bases at home and overseas, and in 48 USO host sites. They will either mail the book with the DVD to the family member or the service member can use the App.
OVBM Comments - this charity has a special place in the heart of the OVBM creator's family as the their family were beneficiaries in 2010 when the Father of two deployed to Afghanistan. Regular books and DVD's were such a wonderful gift for the 3 and 5 year old at home and for the deployed soldier and Father. Have no doubt that this charity has touched many lives. Great way to help a service member, their family and encourage the love of reading.
Barbershop Books is a community-based program that creates child-friendly reading spaces in barbershops providing books and a bookshelf and early literacy training to barbers across America. They leverage the cultural significance of barbershops in black communities to increase boys' access to culturally relevant, age appropriate, and gender responsive children's books and to increase out-of-school time reading among young boys. They provide books and a bookshelf to barbershops around the country.
Their mission is to help boys ages 4-8 to identify as readers by connecting fun books to a male-centered space and by involving Black men in boys' early reading experiences.
OVBM Comments - I first heard about this charity on a TED talk podcast. Alvin Irby is a former Kindergarten teacher. He was having a haircut when a student of his came in and was having a hard time waiting for his turn. As his teacher, Irby knew that this child loved to read and that given the opportunity he would pick up a book to read. Knowing this child was not the only one he created Barbershop books. Insuring safe places to pick up books to read.
Since 1995 this foundation has donated (to date 12/04/20) 150,606,052 books to 1,724,824 children. The group mails books to children from birth to four years old in five different countries. Founded by Dolly Parton this foundation mails a high quality, age appropriate book to all registered children, addressed to them, at no cost to the child’s family.
OVBM Comments - many studies have shown how important it is for children preschool to read books. This foundation recognizes this and facilitates a head start for countless children by putting a book in their hands before school. Thank You Dolly Parton.

OVBM Comments - as we know there are so few minority books it is so refreshing to find a resource with books and astounding to know that a young teen initiated it. One person really can change the world.
At the World Literacy Foundation, they believe in literacy as the foundation of lifelong learning and education. People who cannot read or write experience difficulties with simple everyday tasks such as reading the label of a medicine bottle, filling in a job application or understanding a traffic sign. They help people acquire literacy skills, empowering them with better opportunities in life and breaking the poverty cycle.
OVBM Comments: What a great purpose as we all know literacy and poverty are related if you cannot read or have low reading skills you are much less likely to get a job or even fill in forms for aid.

OVBM Comments - a great idea to give comfort to children suffering from homelessness. Enhancing the view that like a stuffed toy books can provide comfort and stability.
Literacy for Incarcerated Teens, Inc. (LIT) is the only non-profit organization of its kind working to end illiteracy among New York’s incarcerated young people by inspiring them to read. LIT strives to create excellent school libraries in New York City’s juvenile detention centers and non-secure facilities for young people adjudicated as delinquents, the State’s residential facilities operated by the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), and also in schools that serve young people living in group homes. They give young people books and support literacy programming for school libraries.
OVBM Comments: Tools given to those incarcerated to help them get educated gives them a chance when they leave to change their direction. Books are one of their tools.
